Description:
In this episode of Our Top Swims, we look back at J’s Ironman swim. Originally signed up for in 2020, the race was cancelled twice due to the pandemic. By the time he finally got to compete in 2022, J had effectively trained three times for the same event — with the third build-up being the hardest, full of uncertainty about whether the race would even go ahead.
On race day, J completed the 3.8km swim in just over an hour (1:03). That’s a strong time by Ironman standards, sitting well ahead of the average, and it showed the payoff of disciplined training and persistence through setbacks.
If you’re training for open water events — from a first 2k swim right up to Ironman distance — check out our full guide on open water swim training and race preparation. With J’s experience and his qualification as an open water swim coach, the advice comes straight from someone who’s done it.
