The Mousehole Rock Pool: A Cornish Gem
A Splash of History
Nestled in the charming Cornish village of Mousehole, the iconic rock pool is more than just a wild swimming spot; it's a testament to community spirit and a piece of local history. Built between 1969 and 1970, this beloved pool was a response to the community's desire for a safe swimming space for their children in an era devoid of local indoor pools.
A fun fact - when Jay and Tam (brother & sister team behind The Wild Swim Store) were little they met a lovely lady from Mousehole whilst on holiday and their mum stayed in touch with her over the years. Well, it was her father , local man, Harry Pender who designed the rock pool and played a key part in bringing the vision to life.
With initial funding from his father, a heartwarming £32 from the Welcome Home Fund for WW2 servicemen, and unwavering determination, Harry transformed a vision into reality. Armed with his architectural plans, permission from the Crown and local council, and materials sourced from a nearby quarry, he and family and friends embarked on this monumental task.
By August 1970, the rock pool was ready to welcome its first swimmers. A photograph from the official launch day captures the joy and excitement of the local community.
A Pool in Need
Located to the south of Mousehole harbour, just below the Rock Pool Cafe, the pool has been a cherished local amenity for generations. However, the relentless force of the sea has taken its toll, with the pool walls gradually eroding over the years and leaks forming.
Recognising the need for restoration, a dedicated group, the Friends of Mousehole Rock Pool, formed in 2023. Their mission? To bring the pool back to its former glory.
Thanks to their tireless efforts, the first two phases of restoration were completed in spring 2024, resulting in a new walkway and accessible slipway amongst other improvements.
Help needed!
The third phase of the project aims to address remaining issues such as leaks, install informative signage, enhance safety features, and create a dedicated website.

Today, the Mousehole rock pool stands as a testament to community spirit, resilience, and the enduring love for the Cornish coast.
