Wetsuits like the Spectre or the Spook from Yonda are designed to not only keep you warm whilst swimming but to give you an optimum body position in the water.  

The thickness of neoprene around the legs is more than you get than for example on the arms.  

This helps you maintain a streamline position like some of the worlds top swimmers. Reducing the drag that your legs cause while moving through the water making you faster or more efficient.

Many open water swimming events will require competitors to wear a wetsuit. 

For example, triathlon rules state that if the water temperature is below 14 degrees, which save a freak day is pretty much every day in the UK, then wetsuits will be required to be worn by competitors. 

The reason that wetsuits are required is not just due to the potential dangerous threat  of swimming in cold water. A wetsuit as mentioned before makes you more buoyant than when swimming skins. 

The RNLI approved Position to put yourself in if you find yourself in trouble in the water is to lay floating on your back with your mouth facing the sky. If you are wearing a wetsuit holding this position is a lot easier.
