Festive swims are exhilarating and often bring people who do not normally venture into open water during the winter months into contact with the incredible experience many of us know well: The buzz of being immersed in cold water.
However fun the experience may be, it is still one that you should take a few precautions before, during and after so that you do not end up ruining what is a truly Great British tradition. Here are a few (but not exhaustive) to be aware of:
- Be Aware of what lays beneath: Diving head first into submerged rocks or even an unexpected sand bank can cause serious injuries, so be aware of what is underneath you.
- Prepare for Cold Water Shock: Running into Cold water, as is the tradition, will for large proportion of the population take your breath away and cause many to lose control of their breathing. Be prepared and stay within your depth if not accustomed. Especially keep a close eye on younger and inexperienced swimmers.
- Swim with company: This should be for many an easy one, however if you are somewhere a bit more remote make sure you are with at least a buddy or have someone watching from the shoreline.
- Beware the Afterdrop: Your body temperature will continue to drop for up to 20 minutes after your swim. Warm up slowly with a hot drink, and lots of layers topping it off with a changing robe and warm hat.
We hope whatever your plans you enjoy your dip safely and for those who do not already introduces them into the freedom and buzz of dipping in Winter!
