Wild Swimming in North Dartmoor: Swim Bucket List Spots
Share
Join Tam and her mum on a windswept adventure into the wild heart of North Dartmoor, where years of swim-dreaming finally became a reality. With its brooding skies, open moorland, and rugged tors, Dartmoor is a special kind of magic – and the perfect setting for two unforgettable wild swims.
💦 Swim 1: Hidden River Pool Near Meldon Viaduct
The first dip takes place near Meldon Viaduct, a swim spot that had been pinned on Tam’s map for years, but until now, remained untested. Nestled in the rugged landscape near Okehampton, this tucked-away river pool turned out to be a magical find.
They parked up near Meldon Reservoir and followed the river there until they came to where they thought the spot on the map matched up with where they were.
💦 Swim 2: Cullever Steps
Next, they head to Cullever Steps, a picturesque section of the East Okement River. The crossing itself is steeped in history, but it’s the water that steals the show. Here, the river flows over smooth stones with gentle cascades, creating shallow pools perfect for a refreshing paddle or dip. Framed by the wide open sky and distant tors, this spot offers a peaceful contrast to the wilder terrain of the first swim.
Swim Kit Featured
Tam and her Mum wore some of our favourite pieces from the Wild Swim Store collection, chosen to handle Dartmoor’s brisk waters:
-
The LongSleeve Swimsuit – Our own design, with a flexible fit and built-in warmth for longer swims.
-
Fourth Element Rock Hopper Shoes – Perfect grip on the rocky riverbed.
-
Zone3 OWS Ti+ Swimsuit – Lightweight, thermal and neoprene-free: ideal for cooler waters in summer or autumn.
A Note on Safety
As always, wild swimming is done at your own risk. Conditions in Dartmoor can change quickly, and remote areas like these don’t have lifeguards.
